The Official Word: Economy means premium on skill

Depending on which analysis you read, it's either the gloomiest job outlook in 25 years for the class of 2009 or a promising one in certain sectors. The National Association of Colleges and Employers job outlook survey shows that companies anticipate hiring 22 percent fewer graduates from this spring's class but that certain sectors and bachelor's degree majors are in high demand, ranging from accounting to engineering positions and federal employment.

The top skills and qualities employers are seeking, according to NACE, are communication skills, a strong work ethic, teamwork skills, initiative, analytical skills, computer skills, flexibility/adaptability, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills and technical skills.
